Hey this is the first story I have written on LinkedIn about the trending topic of video conferencing.

We did a survey at the office. Many of our colleagues (based in Hong Kong) used more than three (3) systems, some actually use five (5) because they had to join other companies’ web meeting, briefings, webinars in lieu of traveling even if our company uses Microsoft Teams and Skype regularly.

It begs the question why web conferencing systems are all a breed of their own. Unlike the telephone systems which can initiate a call using any phone, any brand and terminates a call on any phone. The notion of interconnectivity was never an agenda amongst these web conference systems providers. Homogeneous network is what this is called – on their own, silos, it will work only if you use the same client software or web-based software. And will i dare say the next startup company that can successfully amalgamate these differences in web conferencing system native protocols and come out with an interconnect solution. This will be the gold standard and will solves many problems. Perhaps the ITU can issue a new series of QR codes, room codes, replacing telephone country codes and telephone numbers.

We have seen the huge growth of uptake of web conferencing system since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Let’s be real, it was for a long time a preferred way for many savvy business professionals to use video conferencing (VC) to conduct business meetings. This is what Polycom (rebranded as Poly and later acquired by Plantronics) had been doing for many years. Cisco, Huawei and many other conferencing systems have also contributed to the first wave of adoption of video conferencing systems (and should I say dedicated place centric – video conferencing system). Today, these systems are still very popular amongst big corporations. It was however the different players such as Skype, Webex and Zoom recently that have popularize the distributed model of web conferencing – making full use of high bandwidth, mobile handset, apps, desktop apps, web-based, etc.

Today, this form of web conferencing system (I called it multi-modal) had successfully lowered the entry barrier of video conferencing which was previously owned by a handful of companies.

History: Before H.264 came into existence in the mid 90s, the limited bandwidth of any dialup modem prohibits mass adoption. It was very visionary for my company’s original founder who through our sister company (now defunct) Bondwell Computers had been toying with video conferencing back in the early 1990s. And yes, it was during the POTS era. (not sure if the audience know what POTS is). This phone is also called i-Phone.
